This dance is based on the traditional "gesture of victory in battle" from the South Pacific island nation of Samoa. Performers light a large knife with burning flames on both ends and dance bravely while spinning it freely around their bodies like a baton.
The dancers, clad only in loincloths, skillfully manipulate lit knives, knowing full well the danger, and the thrill and power of watching them up close is so intense you won't be able to take your eyes off them.
Fire knife dancing began at Spa Resort Hawaiians in July 1972.
It appeared as one part of the Polynesian show. At a time when it was difficult to obtain video materials, it was a trial and error start.
Since then, it will continue to perform as the only one in Japan for 53 years until 2025, and has now gained such popularity that its powerful performances have attracted a devoted fan base.
In April 2016, new members joined the existing members to form Japan's first fire knife dance team, "Siva Ola." With the addition of new members, the team has become even stronger, and is currently active with eight members!
Siva Ola means "strong dance" in Samoan.
He will perform in a solo fire knife dance show, as well as daytime and evening Polynesian shows, and will also appear in experiential events.
Members of Shivaora have participated in the Fire Knife Dance World Championships, the world's top fire knife dance competition, which is held once a year in early May at the Polynesian Cultural Center on the island of Oahu, Hawaii.
The highest ranking Shibaora members have ever achieved was by brothers Val Yuya, who competed in the 26th tournament in 2018, and Mua Fumiya, who competed in the 31st tournament in 2024, both of whom came in second place. In the 32nd tournament in 2025, Mua Fumiya will compete again, following on from the previous year, and Eddie Hayato will make his first appearance.
