Approximately 170 years ago, during the Edo period, in 1855, Heizo Katayose discovered coal (burnable rocks). The place where he discovered it was Mirokuzawa, the birthplace of the Joban coalfield.
The first director, who worked at a small coal mine in Mirokuzawa, continued to collect mining tools (designated Iwaki cultural properties) and materials related to coal mining, such as pickaxes and lighting lanterns, while also running a poultry farm.He converted a chicken farm into the Mirokuzawa Coal Mine Museum in 1989.
Outside, there are replicas of exposed coal seams and the trolleys and rails used in the coal mines.

This was a coal-dressing facility in a coal mine where unnecessary impurities were removed from the mined coal ore and high-quality coal was selected and processed.
This coal dressing plant was established with the aim of improving the quality of coal and transporting it efficiently, and played an important role in the coal mining industry at the time.
In the coal preparation process, techniques such as crushing, vibration sorting, and flotation were used to ensure that the quality of the coal shipped was above a certain level.
