Tokiwa Music and Dance Academy established

The school was opened in December 1968 as the first Polynesian folk dance and flamenco school in Japan, with instructors from various fields and backgrounds (approved by the Fukushima Prefectural Governor). They began training exclusive dancers for the stage, which would become the main attraction of the event.

"Tokiwa Hawaiian Center" opens

Using hot spring water from underground springs during the Tokiwa coal mining era, it opened as Japan's first resort facility and theme park, modeled after the "Dream Island of Hawaii."
The admission fee at the time was 400 yen. Aloha shirts and muumuus, popular souvenirs, were 300 yen each. The catchphrase used was "Bring 1,000 yen and go to Hawaii."

The original form of the current "Water Park," the approximately 7,000m2 large dome, has been a highlight since it opened. Its sheer size has garnered a lot of attention. Palm trees, which were said to be difficult to grow in the Tohoku region, are grown using the geothermal heat of the hot springs. The realistic reproduction of real tropical plants in the dome was a first for Japan, playing a pioneering role.
The most popular attraction was the banana trees. The sight of bananas growing on a tree is extremely rare, and it attracted a constant stream of people.

In its first year, the number of visitors was 2 to 3 on weekdays and about 1 on Sundays, with a total of about 120 million people attending for the year.

According to a survey conducted by the Japan Tourism Association in 1964, Hawaii was the number one country people wanted to visit. However, people responded that they "didn't have the opportunity or could not go" to travel abroad, a situation that is hard to imagine today.
